On 30 June 2014 this LIFE project was completed. It made it possible to highlight the ecological role of pollarded trees in Gipuzkoa in the conservation of saproxylic insect populations of Community interest, such as Rosalia alpina, Osmoderma eremita, Lucanus cervus and Cerambyx cerdo.

The project lasted for four and a half years and started with an initial budget of more than 3 million euros.

During this period, work was carried out on almost 190 ha of native forests, mainly beech forests, where the pollarded trees of the future were created and the large branches of old specimens that were at risk of being knocked down by the wind and snow were trimmed.

SThe habitat availability was improved for the species that are the subject of conservation and the best figures and results were achieved for Rosalia alpine, a species that has benefited from the increased availability of freshly-cut dead wood in the environment.

However, the results of this project show that the situation of Osmoderma eremita appears to be critical because, after extensive sampling, only one adult female was found in Aralar.
